The names Brazilian, Malaysian, Peruvian, etc are sometimes used by certain hair extension brands to describe the attributes these hair extensions are believed to have.

What’s this?  Does that mean the hair extensions are not from the specified countries?  Yes! Not in every case.

Where do human hair extensions come from?

According to data from Statista, in 2021, raw human hair extensions were exported from certain European and Asian countries as well as some from Brazil.  According to this same Statista data, India was the largest exporter of raw human hair worldwide. [1]

Other data from (OEC) The Observatory of Economic Complexity suggests that Hong Kong and Malaysia were the leading exporters of human hair in 2020 followed by India. [2]

So what does it all mean when they say hair is Brazilian, Peruvian, Malaysian, etc.!?!?

Some hair like Indian human hair may be from the specified country, however, some manufacturers and vendors may use these words in the description of their product as a marketing tool that identifies certain qualities the hair may be associated with.

Brazilian Hair

Brazilian Hair is described as being soft, having medium luster and thickness with natural strength. 

Peruvian Hair

Peruvian Hair is described as being a multi-purpose hair that is thick and coarse in texture while being lightweight.

Malaysian Hair

Malaysian Hair is described as being coarse, yet soft, with a natural shine. 

Indian Hair

Indian hair is described as being versatile, smooth, soft, light, and bouncy with a fine texture, and also holding curls well and blending well with different hair types. It is known to have natural curls and wave patterns however, it also swells and becomes frizzy in humid weather.

Vietnamese Hair 

Vietnamese Hair is described as being lightweight, and straight with strong, thick round fibers. This hair has a high level of black melanin which means that when coloring, higher-strength professional products are needed to achieve desired results.  See a professional to perform these services.

Chinese Hair is described as being thick round, coarse, resistant, and naturally straight.  This hair maintains its integrity after undergoing harsh processing and is often used for lighter hair colors, and curl patterns that require harsh chemical processes.

European Hair

European Hair is considered rare and valuable due to its color and texture variations.  It is not recommended to add harsh chemicals to European hair as this degrades the hair quality.

Summary
