Beauty is often described as “skin deep”, but my journey has taught me that its true essence lies much deeper.

Early Perceptions of Beauty

As a young child, I had a natural curiosity about appearance and the world around me. As I grew older, my perception of beauty evolved, shaped by societal influences, personal experiences, and my own journey of self-discovery.

During my teenage years, I equated beauty with traditional makeup trends, believing that mascara and other cosmetics made me attractive.  I became dependent on cosmetics to feel happy with myself which ironically caused my confidence and self-esteem to plummet.

As I progressed through my teen years I became frustrated with the way I felt and my dependence on outside sources to feel beautiful, so I decided to eliminate using these products except when expressing my true self.

In my early twenties, I focused on physical attributes like my long legs as a measure of beauty.  My confidence and self-esteem drastically increased, accompanying regular shopping sprees and many hours spent admiring myself in the mirror.

Shifting Perspectives

In my mid-twenties, I began to appreciate my individuality and found beauty in expressing my unique style.  I began to question the unrealistic beauty standards imposed on women and felt a strong desire to redefine beauty on my own terms. However, it wasn’t until I reached my thirties that I truly understood the depth of my own beauty.

Discovering true beauty

Although societal beauty standards played a significant role in shaping my early perceptions.  As I grew older, personal experiences and self-discovery helped me to challenge these external influences.

I realized that true beauty goes beyond physical appearance. It encompasses my entire being, including my character, values, and experiences.

I began my journey of self-discovery by exploring my interests, passions, and values allowing me to see myself in a new light. I discovered that my beauty lies in my intelligence, creativity, and ability to connect with others.

Accepting myself for who I am in every way, has been crucial in appreciating my beauty on a deeper level. Self-love has empowered me to break free from societal expectations and embrace my own unique definition of beauty.

Over the years, my perception of beauty has evolved from a superficial understanding to a deep appreciation of my true self. By embracing my unique qualities and practicing self-love, I’ve come to recognize that the beauty I sought externally was always within me.
